MEET CHARLES
Hello! Thank you for visiting my website.
I acquired my first camera when I was 17 years old. It was a manual film camera with no automatic features so I had to learn photography the "old fashion way."
I remember taking pictures of anything in sight.....but my photographs lacked focus and meaning. Years later, I started to focus on photographing people and animals, specifically striving to capture the essence of my subjects through portraits.
My first subject was my mother but with a weathered face from years of being outdoors, she was not fond of me trying to take her picture. One day I coaxed her into sitting down on some bales of hay in the doorway of our barn. Getting her to pose and smile at the same time was difficult. Just before giving up, one of her favorite cats crawled up into her arms. As the natural light lit up her face, she smiled and looked into the camera. I captured the only portrait of my mother!
I have spent years honing my photography skills. The wild animal portraits shown on my website were taken with an old fashioned manual film camera and manual flash at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Dr. Simmons, the zoo director at the time, found it amazing that even though the pictures were taken through thick plexiglass, there was not even a hint of glare from the flash.
Fifty five years later I am still striving to master the art of photography, albeit with more modern equipment. What hasn't changed is my desire to capture the essence of people, animals and beasts (sharks!) with a sprinkling of other photographic opportunities.
Enjoy my website and please contact me if you would like to me photograph a person or pet important in your life.
